Chapters 6/7: Explain Jem's Statement: "When I went back they were folded across the fence... like they were expectin' me." (Ben Friedman)

When Jem tries to look at Arthur "Boo" Radley, he got stuck under the fence hole and his pants got ripped and left behind. Dill lied and said that he took them off of Jem in strip poker, so they would not get in trouble. When Jem goes back after the conversation with Atticus and Miss Rachel, his pants were folded across the fence and sewed poorly. He says that they looked as bad as if he were to do them. The only other person that could have sewn like that is Boo Radley. "Like somebody was readin' my mind... like somebody could tell what I was gonna do. Can't anybody tell what I'm gonna do lest they know me?" (Lee 78). Only Boo would know what Jem is going to do, because Boo has been watching Jem his whole life. This proves one example that Boo is really a nice person.

Do you think that Boo is really a nice person? Why or why not?

  1. I agree with Ben in that Boo Radley actually is a genuinely nice person. He secretly tries to help people in the neighborhood; for example, he untangled Jem's pants and sewed them back together, and I think that he is the one who left Jem and Scout little gifts in the knot-hole in the tree. Another way we can see that he is actually normal is when Scout tumbled down into the Radley yard in a tire because Jem pushed her too hard. Scout said "Someone inside the house was laughing." (54) This was most likely Boo Radley, and any normal person would probably laugh a little at a second grader tumbling down the sidewalk inside a tire. Overall, I think that Boo Radley is a misunderstood regular person who tries to be nice most of the time but comes off as creepy because of what he did to his dad many years ago.

  2. I disagree with both Ben and Charlotte in that Boo Radley is a mean a sick person who is messing with little kids. For example when Jem found his pants, while some may say that's an act of kindness, I think that Boo was trying to get inside Jem's mind, and he did. Another way was when there were gifts in the tree, then suddenly it was covered up by cement, disappointing both Jem and Scout.

  3. When Jem goes back to retrieve his pants that were stuck in thorns, he finds his pants folded and waiting for him. I agree with Charlotte and Ben that Boo is a nice person, because I think that he is also the person who is leaving them gifts in the knothole. When Jem asks Mr. Radley who filled in the knothole, he replies, "'yes,' he said. 'I filled it up'" (83). What I think happened was that Boo was giving little gifts to the kids, and his brother let him. But when the Jem and Scout left the letter, Mr. Radley filled in the knothole for whatever evil reason. In conclusion, I think that Boo is a very nice person.
