"'Someday maybe, Scout can thank him for covering her up.'
'Thank who?' I asked.
'Boo Radley.' (96, Lee).
When Scout, Atticus, and Jem are talking about the nights events, Atticus asks why Scout has a blanket that isn't hers. Scout ended up with a blanket around her shoulders because out of kindness, and selflessness, Boo Radley gave her a blanket to stay warm. Harper Lee would include this in the novel because it gives a side to Boo Radley that we haven't seen thus far. A side that isn't crazy, or vicious, but rather kind, sweet, and generous. Boo Radley reminds me of a Darth Vader like character. While that sounds sort of outrageous both of these character's started the story as hated, mean villains, and then become heroes. Despite starting the book as a feared villain, I think that Boo Radley will become a hero as the book progresses.
What do you think Boo Radley's role will be as the book continues?
I agree that, out of selflessness and kindness, Boo Radley gave Scout a blanket to stay warm. So far, Boo has been a silent savior, as he has given the children gifts anonymously, sewn up Jem's pants, and given a blanket to Scout. I think he will stay like this for much of the story, but eventually the rest of Maycomb will discover who Boo Radley really is and he will be able to perform his acts of kindness without worrying who might see him; I think the people of the town will realize that they have been mislabelling him. When Scout says "Jem seemed to have lost his mind. He began pouring out our secrets right and left in total disregard for my safety if not for his own, omitting nothing, knot-hole, pants and all." (Lee 96), I think she is showing that Jem was defending Boo Radley, and that both she and Jem appreciated what he did and do not believe in the horrifying rumors that everyone in Maycomb believes. I think Jem and Scout will be the ones who finally convince Maycomb that Boo Radley is actually a nice person.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you say that Harper Lee is showing a different side of Boo Radley. I don't think Boo Radley will be a hero, but I think that he's going to do something so that Scout and Jem look at him differently. It's interesting how you connected him with Darth Vadar, it's a different way on looking at him.
