Would Boo Radley come out if he had a place to run to? Do you think that Boo would just run off to nowhere? If so, why has Boo not ran off yet?

Chapters 14/15: Explain what Dill means in the last line of chapter 14. Is this surprising to you? (Ben Friedman)
After Dill ran from his home and was found under Scout's bed hiding, he gets in bed with Scout and they start talking. At the end of their conversation, Scout asks, "Why do you reckon Boo Radley's never run off?" (Lee 192). Dill sighs and replies with, "Maybe he doesn't have anywhere to runoff to..." (Lee 192) and he falls asleep. When Dill ran off, he had a plan. He knew he was going to go to the Finches, and Boo Radley, having not been outside in a long time and not really knowing any outside people, does not. Maybe if he could run off, he would, but in his position right now, he cannot run off. On the other hand, maybe he does not want to run off. We do not know if he likes it in his home or not or if he is just too shy to come out. This statement is not surprising to me because Boo has not been outside in awhile. Also, I think that he would just be too shy since he has not interacted with another person, not including the people that live there. It is also not surprising to me because he would have ran off by now if he did have a place to run off to.

Throughout the book so far, Boo Radley has been a mysterious character. At times he is scary and intimidating, like when he laughs when Scout accidentally enters his yard, and when Jem was on his porch and Boo shot a shotgun. At other times, however, Boo seemed to be caring like when he draped a blanket across Scout and Jem's shoulders while Ms. Maudie's house burned down. If Boo were to want to run away from home, why didn't he do so yet? It can be guessed Boo is going to stay. He seems pretty content with his home now as well. For example, Boo, at least to the Finch children, is kind of a condescending figure. He is always in the background, doing peculiar things, some scary but then something else kind all together. Boo has overall earned his unique and mysterious place in the Maycomb neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteI think Boo's reputation also has something to do with the fact the Boo has nowhere to go. Ben is right when he says it's because he has no one to run to, but this is because of his reputation as a sketchy character. He has a long, tough, history in Maycomb, with his twisted childhood which led into adulthood. His family are really the only people who are well-informed about his situation and personality. The rest lies in a cloudy pit of confusion and rumors. Because of this fact, his family would really be the only people Boo could ‘run away’ to. However, we know little to nothing about Boo’s family life, so they may or may not be trustable people, like Ben said. Either way, he’s stuck with them, since he would be either shut out or gazed at strangely (because of his reputation) anywhere else. Unless he finds a way to move to a faraway town and start a new life, Boo will be forever chained to both his family and his reputation, in Maycomb.
ReplyDeleteI think that Boo has never run off because he doesn't have anyone to go to or anywhere to go as Ben said. I don't think that Boo Radley would come out if he had a place to run. After not coming out of his house for years then suddenly running away would make people suspicious and that's exactly what he doesn't want. I also don't think he would just run off to nowhere. People like Jem, Scout and Dill would come looking for him if he ran off because he that would be the only time that he's out of his out of his house.
